Saturday afternoon dog wash

Despite the warm day, the water was cold!!  Jubilee suffered through it.

Meanwhile, in search of some ingredients for an Umbrian Peasant soup, we ventured down to the Strip in Pittsburgh.  Though you can find most anything there, we were unable to find a meaty veal soup bone!

Flowers are sold everywhere now ...
Not sure if these look good or not ...  Regardless, food is plentiful.

  1. In more ways than one, things are hot here. The city could use a dousing with cold water.

  2. It's early this year, isn't it? I wonder if this means it will be a long hot summer?

  3. I am referring as much to the student riots as to the weather. I am afraid for a long, hot summer in both cases.

  4. I didn't realize the students were rioting in Montreal, Barbara. I just read a couple of things, but I still don't understand what the students are protesting ... tuition?

  6. It started to be about a hike in tuition, a few hundred dollars a year for the next 5 years -- still way below Canadian average and way, way, way below USA tuition. It is all rather complicated. There is a cultural factor in play here. Quebeckers have a tacit agreement with the state that, at the cost of higher taxes, they would receive the benefits of a socialist state such as France or the Scandinavian countries. They ultimately want zero tuition and the students who are protesting are hellbent for that, supported by unions, separatists, and the good old anarchist fringe. They don't seem to realize that in countries where tuition is free, the ability to enroll in university is restricted. There are very tough entrance exams. This mayhem been going on for many months and the population is fed up. The government tried to negotiate, but the students were intransigent (perhaps also the government). The government imposed law 78 severely restricting the students' right to protest (can you spell draconian?) and closing the colleges and universities affected (my old college wasn't) for a cooling off period. They would complete the semester beginning in August and the new semester would begin in October. Messy, messy, messy! Meanwhile there are bonfires in the streets, molotov cocktails and bricks thrown, bullying of noncompliant students who are a majority, police intimidated and responding precipitously on occasion, the general public wants a plague on both houses, and the summer season of open air festivals is about to begin. Remember the student riots in France in the 60's? This will not end well, I suspect. Now the anger is now directed toward the current Liberal government whose term will expire next year and the conflict of rights. That was the ultimate goal of the separatists and anarchists, I bet. I'll think I'll be avoiding downtown after dark for some time to come

  7. What a mess, Barbara. At least you have a lot of sunlight this time of year. But then, that can encourage a lot more late night gathering as well.
