Our contemplative prayer group is on hiatus for the summer. We met in the rectory basement. :D Looks like a special place. What is that in the first photo?
The contemplative prayer group meets on the altar of the chapel/Church. One wall in covered with stained glass windows that look like puzzle pieces, but have a cohesive integrity when seen as a whole. I took the photo with my phone as I looked up from my seat in the prayer circle. Not the best photo. There is no socializing or discussion with this group, just 40 minutes of silence. I don't do this long of a meditation on my own, but it seems to be no problem here (which is why I like to go.)
They (both the one in PA and the one in FL) don't really advertise their affiliation, but they are both based on the Thomas Keating teachings, so I suppose that means that they are Contemplative Outreach groups (as opposed to the English/mantra groups). I have never really talked to the people at the FL group, we just sit together in silence. But they do read a short passage from a Keating book before we start (always Keating). The PA group includes a program and discussion - and sometimes it is a Keating video/audio, but more often is someone else - Joan Chittister, R.Rohr, Ron Rolheiser, Jim Finley etc.

ReplyDeleteIs your contemplative prayer group affiliated with Contemplative Outreach or some other group or is it "free-standing"?
