Mount Washington - "Coal Town"

Mount Washington, the neighborhood on the top of the hill, used to be called “Coal Hill”.   Great views of downtown Pittsburgh.

There is a sign up there that reads:

First Mining of Pittsburgh Coal

This State’s bituminous coal industry was born about 1700 on Coal Hill, now Mt. Washington.  Here the Pittsburgh coal bed was mined to supply Fort Pitt.  This was eventually to be judged the most valuable individual mineral deposit in the U.S.

Some of the homes along the street ...

Apartment for rent here! ...
A Carnegie Library.  The sign over the door reads “Free to The People”. [Carnegie Library in Greenville IL here.]

Side streets neighborhoods that go down the other side of the hill...

And the big Church that you can see from everywhere, St. Mary of the Mount (or something like that)...
