the weather and the place

The Autumn Equinox is still a month away, but something has changed around here.  It’s cool, overcast - still dark when I walk Jubilee in the morning.  Even the evenings are different.  No more bright, warm nights where John and I go to bed before it is totally dark.  The lights are on in the apartments when we walk.  No one around here bothers with closing the blinds.  Honestly, it’s about the friendliest place I’ve ever lived.  People of all ages, nationalities, races.  Maybe because most of us are temporary?

  1. I've noticed the leaves turning on a few maples in the area. The same ones turn early each year. When the time comes, you will have to winterize your car. You have time yet.

  4. In Florida it stays summer until October, regardless of equinoxes.

  5. Are they all-season or winter tires, beth? The latter are required up here. The new battery is a good touch. You may want to get a remote starter for those chilly mornings -- ask around at work or in your neighbourhood as to whether it makes sense. I don't have one, but I have a made-for-Canada vehicle and it is not so old. Don't forget a snow shovel and those steel grippers to get you out of ice and jumper cables, if you don't have them. Mind you, PA is not Canada.

  6. Oh my! I think that they are all season tires. I hear it doesn't get so cold in these valleys around Pittsburgh. Anyway, I need to go back to FL in Oct-Nov to tend to some things (like a swimming pool that sprang a leak- ugh). I'll get good and warmed up before the winter. I'm still not altogether sure we will be here thru winter, but it looks like it.

As far as I can tell, Sally, summer usually lasts into Nov and never really goes away. We've been known to run our a/c every month of the year! But it isn't the penetrating heat of summer.

Yes, I think it's the temporariness that makes us all so friendly around here. Too bad we aren't aware of our fleeting existence in more permanent domiciles.

  7. I love the idea of Autumn Equinox...the photo was lovely. I didn't know that Andy Warhol came from Pittsburgh. I don't feel any Autumn Equinox here in South Florida!!!!!!
